FAL Runs

From CASSA

Jump to: navigation, search

We buy the food and drinks we sell from the office at the Balcatta branch of F.A.L, a Cash and Carry store - i.e. a big warehouse which sells things cheaper in bulk.

You need a customer card to shop there, which a few CASSA members have - borrowing another person's card is fine. Currently, Peter/Gwyn and Jana have cards, although we are planning to get one for CASSA and keep it in the office. You can also use an RAC member card to shop there if needed.

[edit] Doing An F.A.L Run (i.e. Buying Food & Drinks for Office)

If you are rostered on to do the F.A.L run make sure you do, or find someone to replace you. - all you need is a car, a customer/RAC card, and cash/card to pay. It is much easier and more fun to do this with two people.

The basic procedure is:

  • Get hold of an F.A.L customer card.
  • See what food and drinks we have left in the CASSA office and write a list of what we need.
  • Drive to F.A.L - it's not far, just go up Wanneroo Road - it's at 8 Geddes St, Balcatta, 6021.
  • Grab a big flatbed trolley and head to the right of the store after entering - that's where the chocolates and candy are, then head down those aisles to find the soft drinks and chips.
  • Grab what we need and keep an eye out for specials - it's worth stocking up a bit if it's a good price. See "Prices" section of this page.
  • Present card at checkout, pay for it all, load up car, drive back to uni.
  • If you've got enough people to carry everything to the office in one or two trips, just do that. Otherwise, drive up to the office to unload. Drive super slow, watch out for people and bollards, and move the car to a parking lot as soon as you've finished unloading.
  • Make sure the receipt is given to the treasurer so it can be accounted for and you can be reimbursed if needed.
  • Stock the fridge/shelf if needed, and pack stuff away neatly. Dispose of cardboard packaging in the recycling bins nearby.
  • Give yourself a pat on the back and maybe even a free drink or chocolate bar for a job well done.

Depending on what you need to buy and what is on special, an F.A.L run budget is $350. You should be able to have a rough estimate of how much things will cost you before going, and be sure to not go overboard.

[edit] Prices

How much profit we make on food and drink sales can vary, depending on what is on special when we buy it. Obviously, we do not want to make a loss - so do not buy things for more than we sell them. If this is a surprise to you, you probably shouldn't be doing an F.A.L run. Most price labels at F.A.L will show the unit price as well as the box price, so you shouldn't need to calculate much yourself.

Items are often on special, so don't worry too much about buying up extra if you see a good price - unless you see a VERY good price. Sometimes they have epic specials which make it worth buying an extra slab/box or two of something, if it's a sure seller and funds permit.

Here are the prices we sell things for, and some vague numbers (from memory - some items missing, will update) indicating what we can buy things for:

Item Our Price F.A.L Normal F.A.L Special
Cans* $1.00* ~90c* ~55c*
Ginger Beer $1.50 ~$1.50 ~$1.30 (only buy if on special!)
Small Energy Drinks $2.00 ~$1.80 ~$1.50 (we don't buy these too often)
Large Energy Drinks $2.50 ~$2.30 ~$1.90 (we don't buy these too often)
Fizzers & Lollipops 50c ~25c  ?
Chocolate Bars $1.50 ~$1.40 ~$1.00
Chips $1.50 ~$1.20 ~90c

* If the cans we want are not on special at F.A.L, they may be cheaper at the supermarket. There's a Coles on Wanneroo Road, between F.A.L and uni, so it is worth checking/buying there if necessary.

[edit] Popular Chocolate Bars and Chips

This is a list of chocolate bars that have proven particularly popular. Try to stick to these items unless something equally appealing is at a very good price.

  • Double Dipped Cherry Ripe (the normal ones sell OK, but not as well)
  • Caramel & Nuts Boost (the normal ones sell OK, but not as well)
  • Caramel Chunky Kitkats
  • Mint Aero
  • Twix

Other bars we've had in stock that haven't sold as fast include...

  • Crunchie
  • Snickers

Remember that we stick to a single pricing for chocolate bars, so don't buy anything that is too small or boring - e.g. Chomps, Curly Wurlies, or regular size Kitkats.

When it comes to chips, Salt 'n' Vinegar is always a winner. Cheese Twisties are quite popular too.
